God of War Ragnarök gameplay: our first impressions
Prior to posting our God of War Ragnarök review, we were allowed to share some impressions of the first few hours in a spoiler-free fashion. We've kept these for you below.
First things first, it's worth stressing that God of War Ragnarök gameplay feels just as good as the previous game, with the combat being just as fun as ever. The game doesn't waste much time with gearing you up, either, and you'll have two familiar weapons in your arsenal before long.
Returning to this world feels totally natural, and the game is quick to remind you of where the last game left off and what unfinished business Kratos and Atreus need to resolve. Kratos is keen to keep training, while Atreus is getting impatient in his search for answers and understanding about himself.
There are some neat character moments in the first couple of hours, and the game seems keen to throw you into the action as soon as humanly (or godly) possible. The returning cast still encapsulate their characters perfectly (even though Atreus actor Sunny Suljic's voice has dropped) and spending more time with them feels like snuggling back in under a nice warm blanket.
Of course, that warm cosy feeling gives way to savage bloodletting before long, although Kratos is still trying to put his war-mongering and murderous ways behind him. Christopher Judge sells this inner conflict beautifully with his still-stellar voice work, and we can't wait to see where this closing chapter of the Norse saga takes him.
Combat is still a major part of the fun, obviously, and the combination of Kratos' raw power and Atreus' bow-and-arrow skills still works very nicely. We're hoping to see some new fighting elements at some point, but to start with, it feels like picking up where we left off, and that's no bad thing considering how great the previous game was.
So far, nothing has felt subpar. The graphics look great with our PS5 hooked up to a 4K TV, with loads of rich details and gorgeous environments, and the continued lack of loading screens in this franchise is still very welcome. It really is good to be back.
Is God of War Ragnarök on PS4 or PS5?
Sony's Hermen Hulst, the Head of PlayStation Studios, revealed in a blog post that God of War Ragnarök will release on both PS4 and PS5. This may come as a surprise, considering that many believed this would be a PS5 exclusive.
Hulst said: "Where it makes sense to develop a title for both PS4 and PS5 – for Horizon Forbidden West, the next God of War, GT7 – we’ll continue looking at that. And if PS4 owners want to play that game, then they can. If they want to go on and play the PS5 version, that game will be there for them."

What is the God of War Ragnarök story?
Sony kept its cards close to its chest when it comes to God of War Ragnarök's story, so we won't spoil it here, but we will say a few things about the game's narrative direction.
For one thing, a showdown between Kratos and Thor was teased at the end of the last game, and we also learned that Atreus' original name was Loki. With those two nuggets of information in mind, you should expect big mysteries to unfold in the game and for more morsels of Norse mythology to factor in this release.
Is there a trailer for God of War Ragnarök?
Revealed to the delight of many at the PlayStation Showcase event last year, here's the first teaser trailer for God of War Ragnarök. While you wait for that God of War Ragnarök release date on 9th November, check this out.
